On time / In time

As duas locuções “ON TIME” e “IN TIME” costumam gerar bastante confusão para o aluno brasileiro. “ON TIME” significa “pontual”, “na hora prevista” e demais sinônimos. “IN TIME”, por sua vez, quer dizer “com tempo suficiente”, “um pouco antes do horário marcado”.

 Examples:

- What time does the meeting start tomorrow?
- At 9 am, but please be on time.
(- A que horas começa a reunião amanhã?
- Às 9 horas da manhã, mas, por favor, chegue na hora. )
- I’ve sent Carol a Christmas card. I hope it arrives in time.
(-Enviei um cartão de Natal para a Carol. Espero que ele chegue a tempo.)
